Overview:

TL Primary is a two-year development programme designed for middle leaders working in primary schools in challenging contexts.  By building the skills of this critical tier of leadership, the programme aims to have a measurable impact on pupil progress and attainment in English and mathematics. Teaching Leaders believes this is essential for improving the life chances of children and closing the achievement gap in these primary schools.

Impact:

The TL Primary programme is centred on an Impact Initiative. In year 1 middle leaders work collaboratively on a school-wide initiative set by the headteacher and work on their own individual Impact Initiative in year 2.

'The benefits of working with Teaching Leaders are already starting to appear. Our leaders have shown that they have had immediate impact on the school, evidenced from an HMI monitoring inspection visit. Our middle leaders are empowering others, leading to a tangible implementation in our school improvement plan. The quality of teaching and learning is improving and the engagement of all our stakeholders is high'.  - Ewan McPherson, Headteacher, Deeplish Primary Academy, Rochdale

Selective:

The programme begins with an initial online application followed by a more intensive assessment at the end of year 1 to select middle leaders who demonstrate the highest potential.

Collaborative: The programme allows headteachers to nominate a group of middle leaders in their schools who work together to apply what they have learned on the programme.

Coaching:

A key component of the programme is small group coaching by an experienced leadership development coach in year 1 followed by individual coaching in year 2.

Residentials:

The programme launches with an intensive Induction Weekend for Associates in August. Year 2 starts the following summer with a week-long Residential for Fellows, alongside secondary middle leaders on the Fellows programme.

Intensive training:

10 days development per year all of which are delivered outside school time, so there are no covers costs.

Network:

Associates and Fellows have access to a national network of over 1000 high-potential middle leaders, as well as their regional network.

Eligibility:

TL Primary is a selective course for middle leaders within primary schools. Both the school and participant would need to meet Teaching Leaders eligibility criteria.

Cost:

The total cost to a school is £1,000 per participant for the full duration of the programme, up to two years. The remaining cost of the programme is paid for from public and charity funding.
